EV Calculus and the Politics of de-"Botch"-ery

E-mail Print PDF

I have been following some of the stories in the press and public regarding the Mini-E program for the obvious reasons.  Some of the latest discussions on the EV movement as a whole and Mini-E in particular has got me thinking about the calculus of an EV enthusiast.

Lately a story that started off to me as some comments on twitter and evolved into a press release from Plug In America about Mini "Botching" their EV program generated quite a few headlines.  It was picked up by the main stream press and various"green" websites.

I understand many of the issues the article addressed and even the views of a couple of the participants that were quoted as having large problems with the program.  I would be the first to say that the program rollout has not been completely smooth.  However, I feel pretty strongly that parts of the message was overstated and the problems encountered were not as severe or unexpected as they made out.  I also had problems with some of the details.  Particularly given that we are only one month into people really having the cars.  I think the participants (at least the many that I have talked to personally) are very enthusiastic still about the cars and the program. I know I am certainly one of them.

Read on for an insomnia driven rant about the the mathematics of the Mini.

1000 Miles and I've just about forgot it's an EV.

E-mail Print PDF

I may be among the last of my fellow trial participants to hit the first 1000 miles in the Mini-E.  I believe that shows me that a smaller electric commuter car really does suit my current needs.

MP gave the car a nice bath to celebrate the occasion.

The most notably new thing with the Mini-E is how much it has just become a normal part of our lives.  I don't tend to really think about it as all this new, environmentally friendly technology much anymore.  I am now finding myself a bit surprised when people want to ask me about it when I am driving around.  It's our going around town car.  When I am popping up to the hardware store to grab something, I don't really think of it as  any kind of an environmental statement. There are still those kind of proud moments.  But it is a testament to the production aspects of the car, that it often feels quite ordinary.  My wife and I both like driving it and have adapted to its quirks like any other car.  I really think that is a good thing.  You don't really need to "compromise" much or be willing to put up with edge technology to have this fill a functional role in your daily life.

Lots of Weekend Driving

E-mail Print PDF

We normally don't drive much on the weekend unless it is a trip out of town.  But this weekend we needed to go back and forth across town a lot it seemed.  Everything was in range of the Mini-E so we logged 192 miles in 2 days.  Could have probably done it on two charges but since the trips were broken up, we just threw it on the charger whenever the car was in the garage.

Considering the heat and we were running the AC most of the time (we had to leave the beach and it is hot everywhere else) I thought the car did great.  Originally, we thought we would just use the car as a weekday commuter and on weekends if we drove, we would take our "smoker".  But it is turning out that the Mini-E really does work for the majority of places we have to go.  So I am pretty happy with how it is working out.  Freeway range seems to burn battery quite a bit so we are taking that into account on our estimates now.  I currently think 70-75 miles as a rough estimate for solid freeway driving is best.  Though with careful driving combined with some surface streets we are still close to 100 in practice.

I find I think about the charging station as having my own gas station at home.  So whenever you get home, you just "top it off" in case you want to go somewhere long.  Once you are in the habit, it works really well.

New Map Feature (Center on Mini#)

E-mail Print PDF

My little Mini-E map is starting to get a bit crowded.  Tough to find a specific Mini on the site.  I realized this when I went to find out where one of the bloggers I follow was located.

So I added a new feature.  You can type in a Mini number and if it is in the database, the Map will center on that Mini-E location.  If not, hopefully we will add it to the map once the owner makes contact.

Let me know what you think.

Welcome #59 and #91

E-mail Print PDF

A couple of more Mini-E's now on the map.

Shannon's #91 right near my office in Playa Del Rey and Stan with #59 out in the farthest North East on my map out in Victorville.  Stan, if I ever try to make that Mini-E run out to Vegas I will definitely be hitting you up for a charge.

Welcome both of you to the Mini-E family and I hope you are having fun with the car.
